Road infrastructure

Your road infrastructure surveyed by EPFL engineers, to VSS standards

Inspection, investigations (testing, core sampling, laboratory analysis) and recommendations: roadways, access roads, municipal networks, pavements, kerbs, car parks, roundabouts, bus stops and engineering structures. We establish the real condition of your road network and provide you with a prioritised maintenance plan.

Why do it with us?

An objective picture of the condition of your roads, so you can decide and budget with confidence.

Signed by an EPFL engineer

Each survey is carried out and signed by our EPFL civil engineer in charge of roads, with 15 years of road experience including 9 years at FEDRO, the Swiss Federal Roads Office.

Advice, not just a survey

We do not simply document: each report comes with concrete, prioritised recommendations. You know what to maintain, when and for what budget, and you act before minor defects turn into costly resurfacing works.

VSS standardised method (SN 640 925b)

Recognised condition indices, official defect catalogue: a credible, defensible report, accepted by municipalities as well as at works acceptance.

An expertise in three operations

Depending on your needs: a simple inspection, often visual, or a full expertise of the infrastructure. The expertise is the inspection plus the investigations plus the recommendations:

1. Inspection: VSS standardised examination of roadways and facilities: cracks, potholes, subsidence, rutting, with a geolocated photographic survey.
2. Investigations: testing, core sampling and laboratory analysis (core drilling, bearing capacity measurements, material testing) to establish the origin of the defects and the structural condition of the pavement.
3. Recommendations: interventions prioritised by urgency, estimated costs and a multi-year maintenance schedule: you decide and budget based on facts.

Roadways and engineering structures: our technical resources

Tools suited to every situation, from visual inspection to high-output surveying.

Pavement laser scanner

For long stretches: a bar of laser scanners covering the full width of the lane surveys the pavement in 3D at traffic speed. Cracks, rutting and macrotexture are detected to the millimetre, without closing the road.

Engineering structures inspected by drone

Bridges, overpasses, retaining walls: the drone inspects hard-to-reach or dangerous areas (piers, decks, the underside of structures) without an aerial platform or lane closure.

Testing and laboratory

Core drilling, sampling and material testing analysed in the laboratory: when the structural condition must be established precisely, investigation complements the visual inspection.

A tailored price, based on a quote

Every road network is unique: length, types of facilities, depth of the investigations and recommendations vary from one project to another. That is why this service does not have a fixed rate.

FAQs

Who is the road condition survey for?

This service is designed for:

  • Municipalities and technical services
  • Property managers and owners of private access roads
  • Project owners before/after works generating heavy traffic
  • Companies operating car parks and traffic areas

What does the report contain?

A map of the defects (cracks, potholes, subsidence, rutting), geolocated and time-stamped photos, a severity level per zone and prioritised recommendations.

Why survey the condition before works?

Construction traffic (trucks, cranes, machinery) damages roadways, pavements and kerbs. A before/after survey objectively establishes who must pay for what, and prevents you from financing pre-existing damage… or bearing the cost of new damage. For the buildings neighbouring the site, complete it with a pre and post works condition survey.

How is the survey carried out?

Our engineers inspect the network using the VSS method, without disrupting traffic. Long stretches can be surveyed with a laser scanner at traffic speed, and engineering structures inspected by drone for hard-to-reach areas.

The maintenance plan, in concrete terms?

Each intervention is ranked by urgency, with a cost estimate and a multi-year schedule: you smooth out your road budget and act before minor defects become expensive.
